same loch, same water…Eilean Donan Castle stands at Dornie, where three sea lochs (Duich, Long and Lochalsh) meet, and our B&B sits a few minutes along the shore of the same loch at Inverinate. Guests walk down our garden to the water the castle sits in. It’s on the A87, about eight miles before the Skye bridge, so most people see it on their way to or from the island; staying here means you can catch it at the quiet ends of the day instead, when the coaches have gone.
There’s a family connection too. The Macraes who held and kept Eilean Donan for centuries were the Macraes of Inverinate, our village, and after two hundred years as a ruin the castle was acquired by a Macrae in 1911 and rebuilt, finished in 1932.

Tickets And Opening
There’s no online booking; tickets are sold at the visitor centre on the day. Adult admission is around £13 in 2026, with last admission an hour before closing, and the hours change with the seasons. Check the castle’s own opening page the night before you go.
The Photograph Everyone Wants
The famous shot is taken from the mainland shore, and you don’t need admission for it. The tide changes the picture completely: high, calm water gives the reflections, low tide bares the seaweed and rock. The castle runs a live webcam, so you can check the light before you leave the breakfast table.
When To Go
In summer the middle of the day belongs to the coaches. Go for first admission in the morning, or walk the outside in the evening. This is where staying a few minutes away earns its keep.
Parking
There’s a big car park with a small charge during visitor hours, and on busy summer days it can fill completely. If it’s full, don’t try to stop on the A87. Carry on to us, have a cup of tea in the garden, and go back early the next morning.
Inside The Castle
In 1719 the castle held a Spanish garrison for the Jacobites; navy frigates bombarded it for days, then blew up the powder store, and it lay in ruins for two centuries before the Macrae rebuild. Cannonballs from the bombardment are on show inside. Photography isn’t allowed indoors, and big bags go in the free lockers at the visitor centre.
Dogs And Access
Dogs can cross onto the island but not into the castle itself. The visitor centre is level, with accessible toilets; the castle rooms are reached by narrow spiral stairs, so anyone who struggles with steps can still make a good visit of the outside.

Eilean Donan Castle In Highlander
you’ll know it before you’ve been…If the castle looks familiar, it’s probably because of Highlander. The 1986 film with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery used Eilean Donan as the home of the Clan MacLeod, and its Highland scenes were shot right here on the lochs. A new Highlander remake is due in 2027, and the cameras have already been back: the night shoot in the photo here was taken at the castle, torches lit the length of the bridge.
It has been in front of the cameras for longer than that: Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1948, The Master of Ballantrae in 1953, Loch Ness in 1996, and The World Is Not Enough in 1999, where it stood in as MI6’s Scottish headquarters. It even spent five years as the BBC One ident. Bollywood knows it too: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) filmed here, and visitors still recreate the dance under and on the bridge, while Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000) used Eilean Donan as a backdrop. One thing to know before you go: ordinary admission is a castle visit, not a film tour, so don’t expect a room of props.
